'Promise' | ||||
'Promise' (stylized as 'promise') is a song recorded by Japanese singer-songwriter Kohmi Hirose, from her seventh studio album, Rhapsody. It was released on November 27, 1997 by Victor Entertainment as the album's second single. It is Hirose's second best-single, behind 'Romance no Kamisama', selling over 600,000 copies. Promise was featured in commercials for the Alpen company's 1998 winter campaign.[1]
Internet meme[edit]
The song was popularized on the Internet through its use in the 'Get Down' (ゲッダンGeddan)meme on Nico Nico Douga and then YouTube, which originally involved cartridge tilting game play footage from the Nintendo 64 game GoldenEye 007 set to the song.[2] Hirose, too, has referred to her own song as 'Geddan' following the renewed popularity in the use of the meme.[3]
Chart performance[edit]
'Promise' entered the Oricon Singles Chart at number 14, with 32,000 copies sold.[4] The song climbed one spot to number 13 in its second week, selling 34,000 copies,[5] and again to number 12 on its third week, selling 42,000 copies.[6] 'Promise' peaked at number four on its fourth charting week, with 69,000 copies sold.[7] It spent the following four weeks within the top ten, selling 244,000 copies.[8][9][10][11] The single charted for a total of sixteen weeks, selling a reported total of 542,000 copies.[12] It peaked at number ten on the monthly Oricon Singles Chart for the month of January 1998 and charted at number 45 on the year-end Oricon Singles Chart for the year 1998.[13][14]

Kohmi Hirose is a J-pop singer. She started piano lessons at the age of 4 and within a year was writing songs. Graduated from Fukuoka Jyogakuin and then Kunitachi Music University in 1989. During her student days, she visited LA and decided to pursue a career in pop music after seeing Bobbie and Babyface in concert.
Soon after, she began taking voice lessons from Seth Riggs, Michael Jackson's voice trainer of 3 years. Her favorite singer is David Foster. After returning from America, her first album 'Bingo!' Was released in July 1992, but the first big smash hit for her was her 3rd single released in December 1993, 'Romance no Kamisama', which sold 1.75 million copies. Subsequent album and single releases around that time of year earned her the title of the 'Queen of Winter', and this was reinforced with the single 'Gerende ga tokeruhodo koi shitai' in December 1995. She is rather unique in the J-pop world in that she writes virtually all her own music & lyrics, and does most of the arrangements as well.

She did not do any live tours until 2001, and when tickets went on sale, they sold out in 15 minutes. Another concert tour, only her second, was performed during early 2007 and a DVD of this tour was released in December of that year. Her musical output seems to be slowing down, with 2007 only producing 2 greatest hits albums, and 2008 a re-release from 1997.
Kohmi married actor Takao Osawa in 1998, but they announced they were getting divorced in November 2006. She has written songs and produced music for many other artists, including Hitomi Shimatani, and is now the principal of a successful vocal school in Shibuya called 'DoDream'. Discography Album.
